Infosys in 2026:

Infosys has the most layered fresher salary structure of the three. Their off-campus drive in 2026 offers four distinct levels. The Digital Specialist Engineer (DSE) Trainee starts at ₹6.25 LPA with a ₹75,000 joining bonus. The Specialist Programmer L1 gets ₹10 LPA with a ₹1 lakh joining bonus. SP L2 gets ₹16 LPA. And the top-tier SP L3 gets ₹21 LPA. Role assignment is based entirely on how you perform in their two-round assessment. One exam, four possible outcomes.

The ₹21 LPA figure made headlines. It is real. But it is for an extremely small number of candidates who clear the most difficult level. Most freshers land the DSE or SP L1 track.

Cognizant in 2026:

Cognizant has two primary fresher tracks. The GenC track pays ₹4 LPA. The GenC Next track pays ₹6.5 LPA. Your track is decided by your performance in the hiring exam — specifically your score on the GenC Next section. In-hand monthly salary for GenC is approximately ₹28,000–₹32,000 after deductions.

After one year and training completion, hikes of 15–25% are common based on your performance band.

Wipro in 2026:

Wipro’s standard fresher package runs at ₹3.5–₹4 LPA for the Project Engineer role. Their specialised tracks — Wipro Turbo and WILP — can take top coding performers to ₹6.5 LPA. Most freshers, however, land the standard package.

Infosys:

Infosys has the most celebrated training programme among the three. Their Mysore campus is one of the largest corporate training facilities in the world. Cognizant’s training is functional and decent. The GenC Next track especially gives you exposure to more technical depth early on. Freshers on the GenC Next path tend to get placed on more interesting projects faster. Bench periods are reportedly shorter at Cognizant compared to some peers. One consistent observation from employees — projects are allocated relatively quickly after training compared to others.

Wipro:

This is where Wipro gets the most criticism. The training is structured but the quality of implementation varies a lot by batch and location. A bigger issue is bench time. Many freshers at Wipro report extended periods without project allocation after training. Some have waited months. This is not universal — some freshers get great projects — but the inconsistency is a real concern.

If training and immediate project exposure matter to you, Infosys leads here. Cognizant is close behind. Wipro is a mixed bag.

Work Culture and Work-Life Balance — The Reality Behind the Reviews

Infosys:

Work-life balance at Infosys is genuinely among the better ones in the IT services sector. The culture is professional and structured. You are not likely to be working midnight shifts in your first year on most projects. The environment is large, sometimes feels bureaucratic, but respectful overall. For freshers from Tier-2 cities stepping into a corporate environment for the first time, Infosys feels familiar and manageable.

Cognizant:

Cognizant reviewers consistently mention a hybrid work model, reasonable hours, and decent manager relationships. One thread of feedback repeats across reviews — work-life balance is good but hikes are low and growth can feel slow. The culture is described as collaborative. For someone who wants stability with reasonable hours in the first two years, Cognizant is a solid fit.

Wipro:

Wipro is the most variable of the three. Your experience depends heavily on which project you land and who your manager is. Good projects exist — but many freshers land support projects that feel repetitive. The 3-year bond that some Wipro offers come with is something to read carefully before signing. Extended bench periods have been reported by multiple freshers. The culture can feel inconsistent.

Consultant’s Note: I tell students this honestly. In 27 years, the most common complaint I hear from freshers at Wipro is not about the company itself but about the lottery of project allocation. If you join Wipro, work hard during training to be visible to project managers. Do not wait passively on the bench.

Growth and Promotions — The Two-Year View

Where you start matters less than where the road leads. Let me give you the honest two-year picture.

Infosys:

Promotions follow a structured cycle. Fast-track growth is possible if you are on the Specialist Programmer track or if you upskill aggressively through Lex and get visibility on high-value projects. Salary hikes are performance-based and generally reliable. The internal job posting system lets you move to different teams after one year.

Cognizant:

Cognizant is known for faster growth for top performers. If you are in the GenC Next band and perform well in your first year, movement to higher bands happens. The caveat is that hikes on the standard GenC track are often described as low. Multiple reviews note that growth depends heavily on manager relationships. The internal mobility is decent but requires you to be proactive.

Wipro:

Promotions at Wipro are slower on average. Hikes, even for strong performers, are often cited as a pain point. The feedback loop from managers to appraisals can be slow. However, onsite opportunities — traveling to client sites abroad — are something Wipro does offer, though the packages for onsite roles are reportedly lower than what TCS and Infosys offer for comparable roles.

For long-term growth, Infosys is the most predictable. Cognizant rewards performers faster but the baseline is lower. Wipro requires patience and proactivity.

Technology Exposure — Where Will You Actually Learn Modern Skills?

This is the question that will matter most three years from now.

All three companies do a mix of legacy and modern project work. But their emphasis differs.

Infosys has been loudest about their AI-first strategy. Their 2026 hiring push is explicitly tied to AI capabilities. If you are in the SP track, the work is genuinely modern. On the DSE track, you may still end up on a Java or mainframe project depending on client needs. The Lex platform and internal certifications give you tools to self-skill, but you need to use them proactively.

Cognizant works with a large number of US-based clients across healthcare, BFSI, and retail. The projects are often client-specific and can range from cloud migration to legacy support. The GenC Next track gives faster access to modern project work. Overall technology exposure is decent and client variety is a plus.

Wipro also does modern work — especially through their partnerships with AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. The Turbo track freshers tend to work on better projects. But the standard track can land you in repetitive support work for extended periods.

The Honest Verdict — Which Company Should You Choose?

Here is how I break it down based on what the fresher wants:

Choose Infosys if: You want the best training foundation, good work-life balance, and a structured career path. You are willing to put in effort during their assessment to land a higher track. Infosys is the most “beginner-friendly” of the three in terms of structured learning and a manageable first-year experience.

Choose Cognizant if: You clear the GenC Next track. At ₹6.5 LPA with faster project allocation and decent culture, Cognizant GenC Next is a strong package for a fresher. The hybrid work model and reasonable hours make it a practical choice for someone who wants balance without sacrificing growth.

Choose Wipro if: You have no other offer in hand, or if you specifically want the Turbo or WILP track and qualify for it. Wipro is not a bad company. But given the variance in experience — bench time, project quality, hike inconsistency — it is typically the third choice among these three for freshers who have all three offers simultaneously.

And here is something I say to every student I counsel — whichever company you join, your growth in the first two years depends 70% on what you do outside of work. Build your GitHub. Keep learning. Do not let a service company be your entire career plan.

FAQ 2 — Is the Infosys ₹21 LPA fresher salary real, and can a regular BTech student from a Tier-2 college get it?

It is real. Infosys confirmed the SP L3 package in their 2026 off-campus drive. But it is very difficult to qualify for. The assessment tests advanced coding, problem-solving, and technical depth that go beyond what most standard BTech curricula cover.

A student from a Tier-2 college absolutely can crack it — but it requires months of serious preparation on competitive coding platforms, strong data structures knowledge, and Python or Java fluency. I would estimate fewer than 5% of applicants land the SP L3 track. The SP L1 at ₹10 LPA is far more achievable for a well-prepared student, and still an excellent starting point.

Consultant’s Note: Prepare for the top track. Expect the middle track. Be grateful for any track that gets you in the door of a company at this scale.

FAQ 3 — What is the Wipro 3-year bond, and should I be worried about it?

Some Wipro offers — particularly for freshers who go through specific programmes — come with a service agreement or bond that requires you to stay for a defined period, sometimes up to 3 years, or repay training costs if you leave early. Read the offer letter carefully before signing. The bond is not illegal, but it can constrain your ability to switch companies if you get a better offer after one year.

If the Wipro offer has a bond and a competing Infosys or Cognizant offer does not, that is a meaningful difference to factor in. Do not sign a bond casually thinking you can break it without consequences.

FAQ 4 — How do I crack Cognizant GenC Next instead of landing on the standard GenC track?

The GenC Next section of the Cognizant hiring exam tests advanced aptitude, verbal ability, and importantly, a coding component that is more demanding than the standard GenC track. Practice competitive coding at an easy-to-medium level on platforms like HackerRank.

Strengthen your quantitative aptitude — practice at least 30–40 questions daily in the two months before the exam. The verbal section rewards reading comprehension speed. Doing well in all three components consistently is what pushes you into the GenC Next bracket. Preparation, not luck, decides which track you land on.

FAQ 5 — Is Cognizant good for freshers from a non-CS background — ECE, Mechanical, or Civil?

Yes. All three companies hire from all engineering branches. Cognizant in particular has a large BFSI and healthcare practice where domain knowledge from non-CS backgrounds can actually be an asset. The key is to clear the assessment, which tests aptitude and coding — not branch-specific knowledge.

FAQ 6 — How long is the bench period at Wipro, and what should I do if I am stuck on the bench?

Bench periods at Wipro can vary significantly. Some freshers are allocated to projects within weeks of training. Others have reported waiting three to six months. If you are on the bench, use that time aggressively. Complete certifications on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. Build a project on GitHub. Take internal Wipro learning platform courses. Make yourself visible to internal hiring managers by updating your skill profile on the company’s internal portal. Proactive bench management can get you off it faster. Passive waiting rarely does.

Consultant’s Note: The bench is not a holiday. The freshers I have seen grow fastest at Wipro are the ones who treated bench time as a second internship — for self-learning.

FAQ 7 — Which of these three companies is better for getting an onsite opportunity abroad in the first three years?

Infosys and Cognizant both have large US, UK, and European client bases and send freshers onsite after 2–3 years of strong performance. Infosys onsite packages are generally considered better than Wipro’s at the same experience level.

Cognizant, with its US headquarters and heavy North American client portfolio, is also a strong onsite pathway. Wipro has onsite opportunities, but the onsite compensation is often cited as lower compared to TCS and Infosys at equivalent experience. If an early onsite is a priority, Infosys or Cognizant is the stronger choice.

Consultant’s Note: Onsite should not be your primary reason for choosing a company at the fresher stage. Build skills first. Onsite follows performance, not just the company name.

FAQ 8 — Can I switch from Wipro or Cognizant to a product company or a startup after two years?

Absolutely — and this is actually a very common and successful career path in India. Many engineers spend their first two years at a service company, build core skills, add a certification or two, complete a portfolio project, and then move to a product company or funded startup at a significantly higher salary.

I have seen students move from ₹4 LPA at Wipro to ₹12 LPA at a tech startup after 18–24 months with the right skills. The key is to not wait. Start building your next-step skills from Day 1. Service companies are stepping stones for many — and very good ones — when used intentionally.

Consultant’s Note: The worst thing a fresher can do is join a service company and then go fully passive, waiting for the company to train them. Be intentional. Two years at Infosys with serious parallel upskilling is often worth more than two years at a product startup with nothing to show.

FAQ 9 — Does CGPA matter when comparing these three companies’ assessments?

All three companies have minimum CGPA or percentage cutoffs — typically 60% or 6.0 CGPA for initial screening. Beyond that cutoff, CGPA matters less than your assessment performance. The exam is the real filter. A student with 7.5 CGPA who scores poorly on the coding section will not get GenC

Next. A student with 6.2 CGPA who tops the coding section will. Prepare for the assessment. Once you clear the cutoff, your CGPA is no longer the conversation.
