Bengaluru Leads Workforce Expansion at 68%, But Talent Shortage Remains a Challenge
Bengaluru continues to strengthen its position as India’s leading technology and employment hub, but a growing demand for skilled talent is creating a new challenge for employers.
According to a recent India Today report based on TeamLease Services’ Employment Outlook Report, 68% of employers surveyed identified Bengaluru as a target for workforce expansion during October 2026 to March 2027. Hyderabad followed at 61% and Pune at 60%.
The report surveyed 1,239 employers across 23 industries and 20 cities.
Hiring demand is rising- Bengaluru is hiring.
Overall, 60% of employers plan to expand their workforce during the second half of FY 2026-27. About 22% expect their workforce to grow by more than 10%.
The strongest employment outlook is being reported in areas connected with digital businesses and emerging industries. E-commerce and technology start-ups recorded a Net Employment Change of 12.6%, followed by Travel and Hospitality at 12.3% and Retail at 10.3%.
Automotive, EV and EV infrastructure, and banking are also showing significant hiring intent.
The real challenge: finding the right talent
The interesting part of the report is that higher hiring demand does not automatically mean easier employment opportunities.
Among employers planning to expand, 72% expect moderate to significant difficulty in hiring suitable talent. IT was identified by 39% of employers as a challenging function, followed by Sales and Marketing at 38% and Engineering at 32%.
The average time required to fill roles was reported at around 35 to 45 days, with specialist and site-based positions potentially taking longer.
What this means for engineering graduates
For students and fresh engineering graduates, the message is important: the opportunity is growing, but having a degree alone may not be enough.
Employers are increasingly looking for practical digital skills, communication, adaptability, teamwork and the ability to work with emerging technologies.
The report also highlights the growing use of AI and Generative AI in workplaces. Around 85% of employers reported some workforce usage of AI or GenAI tools, although deeper adoption across organisations is still developing.
For students preparing for the IT job market, this makes practical skills, projects, internships and continuous learning increasingly important.
The Bengaluru story is therefore not just about more jobs. It is also about the widening gap between the skills employers need and the skills available in the talent pool.
